2004 Governor's Conference on Forestry

To kick off the implementation of the Statewide Forest Plan, Wisconsin's forestry leaders gathered in November 2004 for the Governor's Conference on Forestry in Madison, Wisconsin. Numbering greater than 250, conference attendees represented forest-based industries, universities, environmental groups, landowners, conservation groups, professional associations and local, state and federal agencies.

Conference Themes and Sessions

Seven themes that emerged from the Statewide Forest Plan became the basis of seven champions and leadership teams that convened for the first time at the conference. Each of these teams is charged with tackling a key issue facing Wisconsin's forests, including biological diversity, urban forestry, invasive species, assistance to private landowners, recreational uses of Wisconsin's forests, the state's forest-based economy, and changes in land use and forest ownership.

For the conference, theme champions, or leaders, designed working sessions that addressed the most critical issues related to their themes. These sessions then served as the framework for conference participants to forge partnerships and mobilize the skills and resources needed to address each theme both now and in the future.
